The history of Wikeström & Krogius

In August 1850, the City Council of Turku admitted trader Johan Gustav Wikeström civic rights for salt and fancy goods.

Being a versatile and vigorous man, Mr. Wikeström soon started to supply different kinds of goods to the ships; Finnish timber for export and manufactured products and groceries for import such as liquid paraffin and Madeira coffee.

In 1856, Mr. Wikeström founded a steamship company named Aura and he was one among the people who established a winter sea traffic between Turku and Stockholm.

In 1892, Oscar Wikeström took over his father's business and soon became involved in the coastal steamboat companies. He started a cooperation with the Krogius brothers, Commercial Counsellor Lars Krogius and Honorary Consul Ernst Krogius, and established branch offices in Rauma, Hanko and Loviisa.

In 1911, Oscar Wikeström bought a truck from Copenhagen, the first one in Turku.

The corporate form was changed to a limited company named A.B Joh. Gust. Wikeström O.Y., but the First World War tired the company out like it did to every other company in Finland. To avoid a harmful concurrence, a closer cooperation was established, leading to a joint company A.B. Joh. Gust. Wikeström & Lars Krogius Co. O.Y., abbreviated Oy Wikeström & Krogius Ab, in 1993.

In 2013, the Danish forwarding group Blue Water Shipping acquired Wikeström & Krogius. The merger strengthened the Finnish operations and enhanced the Nordic network significantly.
