This year's potato season has begun. The quayside was busy on 2-3 November when the first vessel of the year - m/s "Nickerie" from shipping line Seatrade - arrived and was loaded with 2,000 tons potatoes for Algeria.
For many years, Danish company Danespo in Give has exported large quantities of potatoes by reefer ship from the port of Esbjerg to North Africa (Algeria, Libya and Egypt). Shipment takes place in close cooperation with Blue Water Shipping which handles potato transport from around Denmark to Esbjerg, warehouse handling, vessel loading and ship's agency.
According to Managing Director Steen Bitsch, Danespo expects to have one vessel departing every week - a total of 8 vessels for North Africa before this season's shipments have been completed.
The seed potatoes are stored in the old potato warehouses in the port of Esbjerg, jointly owned by Danespo and Blue Water. Outside the 3 month potatoe season, Blue Water uses the warehouses for other purposes.
Aside from the export to North Africa, Danespo also sells the Danish potatoes to many other countries - both around Europe and also countries overseas.
